Our Field Method

Rankroostercompassrn is an independent information site about making ordinary campsite tasks easier with modest, understandable projects.

Useful before impressive

We write for weekend campers who want a more orderly cooking area, a manageable charging kit and fewer awkward loose items. We favour removable parts, known materials and repairs that do not require specialist equipment.

Reclaimed does not mean suitable for every purpose. We draw a firm line around food contact, drinking water, batteries, heat and safety-critical loads.

Four questions behind each guide

01 / Purpose

What task improves?

A project should solve an identifiable problem. We do not assume more equipment makes a better camp.

02 / Material

What do we know?

Unknown coatings, contaminated containers and degraded fabric are reasons to choose another material, not details to overlook.

03 / Boundary

What must it not do?

An organiser is not a stove stand. A rain collector is not a purification system. A sewn sling is not certified lifting equipment.

04 / Rehearsal

What happens at home?

Pack, carry, use, clean and inspect before departure. A fallback should be part of the plan.

How to read these notes

These are editorial project guides, not engineering drawings, professional instruction or product certifications. We do not claim that every reader-made variation has been tested. Illustrative calculations explain a method; they are not performance guarantees.

Photography provides atmosphere and context. It is not evidence that a particular configuration is safe, compatible or endorsed. Your equipment manuals, local rules and current conditions take priority.

Sources and corrections

We link to public-health agencies, land managers and relevant technical organisations where they help define a boundary. References to the CDC, EPA, National Park Service, USB Implementers Forum, Leave No Trace and other organisations do not imply affiliation or endorsement.

If a passage seems wrong or unclear, send the page address, the exact wording and an authoritative source if available. Do not include private information about other people. We cannot promise a response time, inspect your build remotely or provide emergency support.
